User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Excellent speaker phone
Pros:

1. Easy to pair

2. Very long lasting battery: went all week without charging

3. Allows voice dialing if your phone supports that feature: press the unit until it beeps (about 2 seconds), the phone goes into listen-for-command voice dial mode; speak into SP700 the name you want to call as it appears in your phone’s list (i.e., “Home”); the phone makes the call (I’m using a Nokia 6555–not all phones have the voice dialing function)

4. Compact

5. Easy to charge via its USB port

6. Clear communication: both parties hear clearly (this is, after all, the main goal) with virtually no background interference

7. Announces its state: electronic voice says, “Connected,” “Power off,” “Incoming call from xxx-xxx-xxxx,” “Call ended”

8. Automatically turns itself off 10 minutes after phone is out of range (30 feet

9. Can play music or podcasts through it if you want–assuming you have a decent player on the phone; many don’t

10. Portable: it would work as a desktop speaker phone if you want and easily moves from vehicle to vehicle.

Cons:

1. Can only pair with one phone at a time–if you have a personal and a work phone it’s one or the other

2. Can be too loud–it defaults to a very loud initial volume (perfect if you have earphones jammed in your ears–you can still hear everything); it’s almost painfully loud

3. You have to turn it on when you get in the car. It would be nice if it sensed the phone and turned itself on.

4. FM transmission to 88.1 or the other freqs is difficult in Los Angeles. The spectrum is so full it’s almost impossible to find a clear open channel. This is hardly necessary because the built in speaker is so effective. If you really want to use your car stereo it probably can be fiddled with until it works, but why bother?

5. The control buttons are poorly marked

Bottom line: it really works for both ends of the call, it’s not expensive, it’s portable, battery life is very long.

5 Stars Never fumble for the phone again.
My brother gave me a Jabra for Christmas. My phone was so old, it did not have Bluetooth technology and I went out to get a new phone just so I could use it. Well, I’m glad I did. The only time I need to talk hands-free is in the car. This is perfect for that.

The Jabra is wonderful. It’s sleek and thin, doesn’t obstruct my vision when on the visor. It was quick and easy to set up and use. When calls come in, I only need to touch it to answer. No more fumbling for my phone. The sound is crisp and clear. I talk mostly to my husband on it and he says the sound is clear on his end. My kids talk to him from the back of the minivan and he can hear them, too. I much prefer it to the earpiece, which I had to worry about falling out of my ear and gave listeners on the other end an echo. It’s also preferable to the speakerphone function of the cellphone.

This is a wonderful gadget — one of those nice to have, makes my life easy sort of things. I’m glad I own it.

UPDATE: The battery life is remarkable. It’s been three months and I’ve only charged it once. Admittedly, I only turn it on to make or accept calls about once a week, but most rechargeable batteries discharge over time even without use. Still haven’t found any problems with this product. Two thumbs up.

4 Stars WORKS GREAT FOR ME
I’m not sure why anyone would buy this for other reason than handsfree cell phone use. For that function it is perfect for me.

My phone is a simple LG Env2. It synced up instantly and completely. I was using it in about 2 minutes out of the package. I didn’t charge it first as suggested, but I did right after!

The speaker and sound is clear and crisp, and with plenty of volume, which is adjustable. Whether I use the FM feature is in doubt. It works perfect the way it is.

This item would be 5 stars as far as I am concerned, but the instructions are so bad, for new users it would be difficult to set up

3 Stars Jabra SP700 bluetooth speaker/FM transmitter
The Jabra SP700 speakerphone/FM transmitter is very good when I am able to connect it properly with my iPhone 3G. I can play my itune music and podcast on my car FM radio and also have good cellphone functionality, however finding any repeatable methodology to obtain this level of connectivity continues to elude me. It often takes 10 to 15 minute to get a connection which makes the SP700 impracticable for my needs. The multifunction FM/Language selection and on/off buttons are quirky and often unresponsive to the various methods of input (ie Tap, press or press and hold) as described by the user manual.

Bottom line: The Jabra SP700 is great once it is connected but a few more dedicated function buttons would make this more user friendly.

3 Stars Good sound quality but some people hear their voice echo
I like the speakerphone. It works simply. It quickly connects to my cellphone. I can easily switch between FM transmitter and the base unit for hearing people. It automatically turns itself off if it can’t reach the phone for 10 minutes.

BUT some people hear their voice echo on it, despite “echo cancellation” that’s touted as a feature. This is very annoying to them but I don’t notice it. (I tried to contact Jabra about what to do but its contact form says that I’ve skipped a “required field” and so it won’t send my email, even though I’ve repeatedly filled out EVERY field. And “echo” does not appear in the search for technical support FAQs on its site, even though it’s a dropdown selection on the support contact form. And this problem is not covered in the online manual’s troubleshooting section.)

Anyway, I’ve found my voice is clear to others and I’ve found that others’ voices are clear to me. You get better sound on the FM transmitter than you do through the base unit, which can sound tinny, but both are good. So I’m happy in general. I prefer the speakerphone because I wear a bluetooth earpiece regularly as part of my day job and it’s nice to take it out while I’m driving — even though, LOL, the manual says to NEVER EVER use the device while driving.

Motorola PEBL U6 Unlocked Cell Phone with Camera Bluetooth International Version with No Warranty Celery Green

June 25th, 2009 Cellphone Review No comments

Motorola PEBL U6 Unlocked Cell Phone with Camera Bluetooth International Version with No Warranty Celery Green

Motorola’s PEBL U6 is the second model in Motorola’s high-end “four-letter word” line, following the super popular RAZR V3. The PEBL takes some of the same materials and technologies used in the RAZR, and packages them into a completely different kind of clamshell handset. While the RAZR is all about thin, sharp angles, the PEBL is more about design, making use of soft curves and smooth lines throughout.

Screen shots from the PEBL.

The graphite black finish on the smooth, rounded exterior of the PEBL U6 manages to appear very glossy while still having a visual texture to it. The effect is very cool in person, but the downside is that the phone is an absolute magnet for fingerprints. But that’s just the cost of high fashion, isn’t it?

The PEBL’s biggest claim to fame is perhaps not its shape and look, but its unique opening mechanism. A series of custom hinges, a dampening device, and some magnets allow the PEBL U6 to be opened up one-handed in a very smooth, elegant manner. When holding the device, you simply use your thumb to pull the top cover towards the bottom of the device a bit, which releases the magnetic latch that keeps the spring-loaded opening mechanism at bay. At that point you simply move your thumb out of the way and let the spring do its job. The motion is smooth and slow enough for the device to maintain its balance.

Once open, the PEBL’s unusual keypad is ready for use. The directional controller and its center select button are very typical of mobile phones, but the rest of the keypad builds on some of the unique design elements we saw in the RAZR’s keypad. The PEBL’s keypad and softkeys are completely flat. The actual buttons are hidden behind a single sheet of metal that has a bit of give to it, allowing finger pressure to make its way to the switches underneath. Thin strips of translucent material let light filter in from behind, just as they do on the RAZR’s keypad. The net result is a very distinct-looking keypad that probably sacrifices a little too much functionality in the name of fashion. Individual keys are simply much easier to find and press, even if they don’t look nearly as sharp.

The inner workings of the PEBL U6 seem to be stock Motorola. The handset comes in two variations, each of which supports three GSM frequency bands and EDGE data. The North American version supports the 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 Mhz bands. The internal display is a 262k-color unit with a pixel resolution of 176×220. The battery should be good for over 6 and a half hours of talk time, or up to as long as 10 days of standby time according to Motorola. Bluetooth support more than makes up for a lack of infrared connectivity. The only aspect that seems a bit dated is the PEBL’s VGA camera. For a high-end handset like the PEBL, you certainly would expect more resolution in the camera.

Other highlights include 5 MB of internal storage that can be used for MP3 or MIDI ringtones, photos and video clips, and downloaded Java games and applications. The addition of speaker-independent voice dialing and voice commands are welcome, and the PEBL’s relatively low weight of 3.7 ounces (110 g) makes it quite pocketable.

Pros:

  • Unique design
  • Automatic opening mechanism
  • Bluetooth

Cons:

  • Low-resolution camera
  • Difficult keypad

Motorola’s PEBL U6 is a unique handset. Where it goes, stares and longing gazes will follow. It might not have the full range of high-end features inside, but for the see-and-be-seen crowd, it probably has everything to get the job done.

4 Stars Really very nice Phone
The green color on the web page has a more ’sage’ look, the actual phone is slightly more yellow-green, and metallic, which came as a disappointment, however, I really like this phone – it is a beautiful design inside and out. I have only used standard texting and call features, but it is very robust, easy to use and to notch design.

5 Stars A cute cheap phone
I break my phones without blinking so when i broke my LG vu, I was done with buying expensive phones. This phone is great. It’s unlocked so all you need to do is put in your simcard and your phone is ready. The hardware is great. It looks adorable and the slide to flip action makes me happy ^_^. I only use my phone for calling and texting so i didn’t mind that the internet won’t work. Saves me the extra bits it would cost if i accidentally presed the web button.

If you broke your phone and you don’t want to buy a used phone. get this one. great price for a working phone.

1 Star WATCH OUT FOR THIS COMPANY
This company only sent me half the cell phone… Be careful…. Returns are quite difficult….

5 Stars Love it!
I enjoy the phone and it worked great with any sim card i purchased overseas (mainly Italy). Very decent battery life and user friendly.
