The AT&T 3G network uses the dual-band UMTS 850/1900 MHz network (also known as WCDMA), making it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless multimedia services. It also gives AT&T the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services.

In areas where the 3G network is not available, you’ll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. A majority of users in the architecture, engineering and construction industries rated the ability to share live video through Video Share highly, according to research commissioned by AT&T. User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Not As Tough As It Looks
THE YELLOW MODEL MAY NOT BE A GOOD CHOICE. With the military specs and all, I thought this phone would be a tank. In the first hour after I bought it, I placed the phone in my pocket with my old phone, a Sony Ericsson W810i. I later noticed scratches all over the front plastic panel of the Rugby. Over the next few weeks, I also noticed mysterious dark stains appearing on the yellow rubberized coating. It appears that whatever this colored material is made of is picking up stains that can’t be removed, almost as if the coating was wearing off to expose a darker material beneath. It’s worth noting that I keep this phone in a zipper pouch designed for a small digital camera, so there is no friction applied to the phone. I treated my phone’s exterior to Vinylex protectant in hopes this will reduce the absorption qualities of the yellow coating. Looks like a snap-on cover will be required for true protection. I also noticed that the hinge has more play than I would have expected for this type of phone and more than I would like to see.

Otherwise, the phone isn’t bad. I like the size and feel of the keypad – with the exception that the clear key is too close to the navigation keys; a small ridge between the two would help prevent pressing clear when you had wanted to hit the down function of the navigation key. Talk quality is good as is the battery life. Push-To-Talk does not have a means to shut it off, so you will constantly hit the button by mistake and be prompted whether you want to accept the charges of that feature. I was surprised that the small 1.3mp camera actually takes pretty good pics.

Actually a good phone overall, but it would be more durable with a protective cover – which then would eliminate the novelty of the yellow “DeWalt tools” color scheme.

UPDATE (2/8/09): YELLOW MODEL WAS A BAD CHOICE. I now know that the yellow coating absorbs anything with grease or dyes that it comes in contact with. The black and red from the inside of the carrying pouch I keep this phone in is being soaked up by the yellow coating. Again, this staining cannot be removed. It appears that Samsung neglected to do proper R&D on this coating – anything else on the phone? A hard yellow plastic shell would have been far superior. Unless you purchase a clip-on cover (which I am looking into), this phone can only be stored in something like a cotton bag that has not been dyed – unless you don’t care if the phone looks dirty and old. Functionally the phone might be military spec, but esthetically it is the least durable phone I’ve ever seen. Samsung blew it with their choice of cover material. Also, I’ve seen a demo model of this phone in an AT&T store where the speaker grill on the front was badly dented and the paint scratched off. It’s unfortunate when you spend a lot of time researching something only to find out after you finally bought it that you made the wrong choice. If you want the Rugby, get it in black.

4 Stars Not for Mac Users
I like this phone but I wish I would have known in advance that I would not be able to install ring tones and other Mac sounds/music on it. Had I known this I would have purchase and IPhone instead.

3 Stars Great potential, but it falls way short
Received the Rugby in 2 days. I knew it didn’t support voice dial, figured I could get used to that. But what really suprised me, and is a constant annoyance is the outer display. It turns completely off within 5 seconds of closing the phone. There is nothing in setup to configure it differently. What is the point of even having an outer display, especially a 65,000 color display, if it is never on for more than 5 seconds? Furthermore, the display does not respond to any buttons on the outside of the phone. You have to actually open, then close the flap to check the time, or to see if you have missed a call.( a two handed operation). It does not even light when connected to the charger. It appears dead unless it is handled constantly.

This complaint may seem insignificant, but I am a carpenter/ woodworker, I use loud machinery, so I miss a lot of calls, and I do not wear a watch. I keep my phone on the bench near where I am working, and often glance at the phone to check for missed calls, or the time. Sometimes I have glue on my hands- even paint- I can’t be picking up and manipulating the phone every few minutes. This phone is being marketed as a workingman’s device, but it falls way short.

It is a fairly large size, a bit large for jeans pocket, but one could get used to it. The speakerphone is excellent. Loud. Very Loud. I would be extremely satisfied with this phone if not for the front display issue.

1 Star Don’t be disappointed
I bought this phone for its rugged specifications. I’m an active person (firefighter) and I thought I’d like some additional protection. The specs are nothing more than window dressing. The phone got wet, admittedly immersed, and failed.

When warranty work was sought, Samsung simply voided the warranty for the reason of “moisture.”

Worthless company, worthless product.Samsung Rugby A837 Phone, Black (AT&T)Samsung Rugby A837 Phone, Yellow (AT&T)

3 Stars A bit of a letdown
This refers to the MAROON model but color shouldn’t be a factor.

I purchased this phone primarily because of its ruggedness, and on that score it’s fine. As an old guy (not old enough for a Jitterbug), I won’t use 90% of the features but those I want are lacking. I wanted voice dial: nada. With all the bells and whistles available, why can’t we record a call? How often are you in a position to jot down info a caller provides?

5 Stars Solid Tough Phone
This phone suits me perfectly. It fits in my hand, extends from my ear to my mouth and best of all is solid and rugged. It feels like it will never break. It has a lot of wireless capabilities (internet, video,GPS, Push-To-Talk, etc.) but through AT&T I’ve inactivated these. I don’t really want to pay extra for this stuff since I have my laptop with me quite a bit and it does for me what I need. I’ve had this phone now for three months with really no complaints. The camera takes pretty decent pictures too. It has USB connectivity so pictures/video can be directly downloaded to a computer.

1 Star Does not meet spec
Bought this phone because the specifications said it would withstand water up to 6 feet and other environmental hazards. Dropped it into a glass water and the face plate came unglued. Do not think a glass of water exceeds 6 feet. So, phone does not meet manufacture’s specification.

Do not buy if you expect to need a rugged phone.

2 Stars short battery life,not 4 texting
My 2yr old motorola beats this thing hands down. Rugbys texting really really sucks, not user friendly very slow no auto complete as my old motorola had. It also has about half of the battery life of the old Motorola.

Oh ya while we are at it all of you ptt engineers out there fix the software so the ptt can be locked out! This does not take a genius to figure out that people want this option “my motorola sucked in this dept as well”.

As for a working mans phone why the heck isn’t the clock visible on the face when the phone is closed? Working guys don’t want to open up the phone to see what time it is!

Also the only case i could find is one of the nylon with velcro type cases which is huge. If i wanted a phone in a bag i would travel back to 1993 and get the big bag phone!

I will admit that after about 3 months I am getting used to this phone but it has not been an easy transition. The reason I chose this phone was due to the calandar function which i have found usefull but it has come at a heavy cost.

1 Star Don’t get your hopes up

This is a VERY sturdy phone and individuals with large fingers, like myself, will appreciate the accessable key pad. Speaker actually reproduces music as well as a small radio would. Love it to death!!!

1 Star Could be a great phone, if not for VZW
I’m now in my third month of service with Verizon Wireless and I can say without a doubt that I am dissatisfied, to say the least. My biggest source of dissatisfaction comes from the phone itself, a Motorola V750 Adventure, and most of the problems with the phone can be laid directly at the feet of Verizon Wireless.

Transferring music files involves interfacing with Rhapsody, rather than using the elegant and useful Motorola Phone Tools software that I used happily with my old V365. Transferring MP3 files is an excercise in patience. I do not care for Rhapsody’s interface anyway, which is why I use ITunes. I finally figured out how to get the files out of my music folders onto the phone after loading Verizon’s version of Rhapsody. Sometime during the course of trying to get the phone to work, I inadvertantly activated V-Cast. Getting that credited off my bill was difficult, but finally accomplished, although I still got stuck with a portion of the billing for a service I didn’t want and never used.

I’ve tried to come up with a way to use normal headphones with this unit; not happening. The 2.5mm headphone jack will only work with a two way headset. Attempting to plug a good set of phones into the jack results in nothing, so I seem to be stuck with a MP3 capable cell phone – the reason I chose this phone to begin with – that is a lousy MP3 player. I now also have a pile of adaptors that don’t work. If there is an adaptor that will work, the Verizon store salesman in my area doesn’t know about it.

Why Verizon chose Rhapsody over Motorola’s own file transfer program is a mystery to me, as I would think the ability to handle all your digital files with one easy-to-use program would make for a happier end user, which as I am beginning to discover isn’t too high on Verizon’s priority list. This concludes the music portion of my criticism of the V750’s shortcomings.

Now for pictures. The Motorola V750 includes a 2 megapixel camera – no flash. No flash I can deal with. Apparently, the only way to move photos off my phone and onto something I can use as a photo editor involves sending the photo via text to an online album. That’s something I can’t deal with. Here’s a clue: texting photos without a plan costs $.25 per photo, or you can opt for a plan at I forget what ridiculous cost. The Motorola V365 I had while I was with AT&T Mobility allowed me to transfer into my editing software using – you guessed it – Motorola Phone Tools software at no additional cost. So I now have a camera phone – the 2 mega-pixel camera being another reason I chose the V750 – that is a lousy camera.

I’ve been told that data on an optional memory card can be transferred directly using an USB adaptor – yet another unnecessary expense.

The main purpose of a cell phone is to make and receive phone calls, and at this the V750 is adequate. I’d like to blame all of the V750’s problems on Verizon, but Motorola desrves at least some of the blame for allowing Verizon to talk them into making this piece of junk. If all I wanted was an adequate cell phone, I’d have opted for the freebie that comes with the detestable contract and to heck with it.

In effect, I’m paying for something I can’t use properly.

I have better things to do with my life than worry about a cell phone, so as I had time, I made several trips to the Verizon store trying to come up with the right combination of software and adaptors to make this phone work, to no avail. By the time I figured out once and for all that this phone was not acceptable, it was too late to trade it in for something else. Apparently, the only way to get a usable phone in the Verizon sytem is to go with a smartphone. How AT&T managed to get it done with a lowly V365 is beyond me. Maybe they’re just smarter than Verizon.

I don’t recommend either Verizon or this phone. If you’re going to go with Verizon anyway, stay away from this phone.

2 Stars Big hunk o’ Junk
I tried this phone a few weeks ago direct from Verizon Wireless. The call quality was so-so, the phone is huge and clunky, and it is not so rugged after all — that battery compartment door that feels like it wants to fly off. I promptly returned it. Verizon took many calls and emails to finally refund my money.

1 Star The single WORST electronic device I’ve ever owned.
This phone is a mess, plain and simple. It’s bulky and boasts “ruggedized” technology when there is only a flimsy plastic battery cover but no other protection to the phone. It’s heavy and awkward with WAY too many features. The red button on the left-outside is easily pressed accidentally and brings the front screen to either Push To Talk Mode or The Music Player (usually the player). When this happens, you open the phone and it gets stuck on the music player until you clear the screen. This happens EVERY TIME I use the phone and is ridiculously annoying. Also, when sending text messages or taking pictures (really anything that involves the phone to think a little bit) it freezes constantly, making you take out the battery and restart the phone. This happens to me at least 5-8 times per week. The speaker phone is also VERY soft. When using it, you have to talk with the phone in hand but close to your mouth, thus defeating the purpose of the speaker phone. For such a large grill-like speaker on the outside-bottom of the phone, you’d expect something you can use properly. The phone does get great reception and the battery life is great, but you can get these features on many other phones and this phone is not worth the headache. I am a fan of Motorola, but I strongly recommend they rethink this design, it really is just plain awful.

3 Stars Not too bad
Overall, I like this phone.

Pros: 1. The rubberized key pad (I tend to have lots of dirt and hay in my pockets and the rubber prevents it from getting in the keys… plus it looks cool). 2. I get really good reception almost everywhere.

Cons: However, I have so far gone through three of these phones. The alarm clock on the first one didn’t work, on the second one I had a hard time hearing people talking to me and visa versa AND it had pictures of the previous owner taking pictures of themselves in the mirror with the phone (the store said it was a new phone, but it obviously wasn’t), and now the alarm clock has stopped working on the third phone (I’ve had it for about two months now).

4 Stars Fix For Push-To-Talk; Not Really Water-Resistant.
Having read the previous reviews on this phone which mention problems with the push-to-talk button bringing up the Music menu, I too had this problem. It’s due to a built-in default if the customer doesn’t subscibe to push-to-talk service. My local Verizon store fixed this issue by mechanically disabling the push-to-talk button so that it didn’t function at all. Most Verizon stores may not be aware of this quick fix or may not want to do it, but it exists and it solves the problem. On another matter, this phone is NOT water-resistant. If that is an important feature, check out the Casio Boulder that Verizon carries. The sound quality isn’t as good, but it’s water-resistant. One caveat with the Boulder is that it can be hard to find replacement batteries when Casio updates the model. This was the case with some of their previous models.
